(NC)—The New Year is often the time when many people resolve to be more physically active on a regular basis.
"Research has shown that being active can protect against certain types of cancer, such as breast and colon cancer," says Patti Payne, senior advisor of prevention at the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division.
In fact, 30 to 35 per cent of all cancer can be prevented by eating well, being active and maintaining a healthy body weight. And regular physical activity is important for people of all ages in maintaining a healthy body weight.
So, don't let the cold winter days keep you inside until spring; bundle up and get a group together — or make it a family affair — and try one of these fun and healthy outdoor activities:
• Find a nearby hill and go tobogganing.
• Build the biggest snowman on the block.
• Create a snow fort (without a roof).
• Go cross-country skiing.
• Go downhill skiing or snowboarding.
• Try snowshoeing.
• Shovel the snow on your driveway instead of using a snow blower.
• Take a nature hike and explore the chilly secrets of the snow – like animal tracks.
• Check out the local skating rink and go skating.
• Play outdoor hockey.
These are great ways to get some fresh air and exercise while having fun. But don't forget, just because it's winter, doesn't mean you're safe from the sun. Always remember to protect your skin with sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
