(NC)—Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be a physically and emotionally debilitating condition for many couples. However, just because a couple is experiencing ED, may not mean having to live with it. Understanding your options is an important first step to addressing the problem and reclaiming a healthy sex life.
Increased awareness about ED coupled with medical advancements and research has led to improved knowledge, understanding and treatment of the condition. There are four main categories for treating ED, which are all proven and effective methods for some individuals: professional counselling, devices/therapies, surgery and medication. Each treatment category possesses specific benefits and risks that your doctor can discuss with you.
Professional Counselling
Even with the presence of physical causes of ED, counselling can be very important. Often times, external factors such as stress, anxiety and social pressures impact sexual function. Consulting with a trained counsellor, psychiatrist or psychologist may help a man and his partner develop an approach to allow a more fulfilled and pleasurable experience.
Devices/Therapies
There are devices on the market aimed at alleviating ED including vacuum therapy, intraurethral therapy, and also, penile injection therapy.
Surgery
Some men may also consider penile implant surgery when other treatments have been unsuccessful.
Medication
The development of oral medications means less invasive, more convenient treatment than previous methods. These medical treatments, called PDE5 inhibitors, increase blood flow to the penis, enhancing erections. Recent innovations to this class of drugs allow for once a day dosing for continuous treatment.
Regardless of the method selected, consultation with a physician is vital to understanding the implications of erectile dysfunction and to finding a treatment option that works best for you and your partner.
