Community dinners for healthy eating every day

By Kristin Jenkins for the Canadian Health Network

(NC)—Are you run ragged trying to plan and prepare nutritious dinners for your family each week-night? Here's an idea that will let you put your feet up 4 nights out of 5 and still enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal.

It's as simple as starting a "supper club" with neighbours and other friends who live close by. Members of each household cook one meal a week that will feed everyone in the group. (Sure, you may need to expand that vegetarian lasagne and low-fat Caesar salad to feed 12 people, but the flip side is that on the other 4 nights of the week, you will be the happy recipient of home-cooked, nutritious meals—all without lifting a finger. With your new-found free time, maybe you can head to the gym before dinner!)

Here's a to-do list for getting organized:
• Call a couple of friends to discuss the idea and get names of other friends they think might be interested. Each person who recommends a friend will call that person to invite them to join the supper club.
• Get the group together to share recipes, food preferences, meal planning, meal pickup times and so on.
• Each household will provide the group with one meal a week for the first month. Before the end of that month, arrange a time when everyone can get together (over dinner?) to trade recipes, update the menu and enjoy each others' company.

Bon appetit!
